Christ as Good Shepherd, Mausoleum Of Galla Placidia

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia features a wide array of mosaics. Entering into this mausoleum, you are greeted with bright blues and yellow and white stars. Scattered about in different archways and entrances are the detailed faces of Jesus and the saints. One of them is another depiction of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. However, this representation is strikingly different from the ones found in the catacombs. Jesus is no longer just a typical countryside shepherd. He has been bedecked with a gold tunic and purple robe and his head glitters with the light of his impressively large halo. He shows tenderness and caring to his sheep gathered about him as he reaches out to touch the nose of one of the sheep. This mosaic shows the evolving idea of Christ and the merging together of the ideas of his humbleness with his princeliness into one cohesive image.
