Venus of Willendorf

In a world where we are used to acrylic paints and supplies made of plastics or other manufactured materials, there is something striking about seeing a piece completely from the earth: a piece of limestone found about the ground, carved with a handmade tool, slathered in the natural pigments of ochre. There you have the “Venus of Willendorf,” striking in both its form but also in its interconnectedness with the elements it was born from and that its creator dwelt amongst.
