Joy of Life, Matisse

When considering the relationship between art and nature, Matisse has created a painting that revolves completely around that concept. All the subjects are in their natural nude states and out in nature doing whatever they find pleasing. Matisse utilizes bold, contrasting colors, grabbing your attention with the unusualness. The title is fitting for this piece as all of the people depicted are pursuing those things that will bring them joy. There is dancing, sleeping, socializing, and embracing loved ones. Though unnatural in appearance, it encourages the pursuit of life's natural, simply joys, saying that these things lead to a happier life.
