James Turrell acquired the Roden Crater in 1979 and set about making it into a naked-eye observatory. It is still in progress, but certain rooms have been added to the structure, most with specific design and situation about the crater so as to control the perception and focus of those inside. The idea is not only artistic and fanciful--so are the rooms and passageways within the crater. They too play with light and its path as well as working with clean geometric shape, causing one's focus to be primarily on looking up.
