Continuing with his usual animal subject matter, Franz Marc painted these horses in a very natural, almost cubist manner. His simplicity still manages to deliver emotion. He used his colors specifically to deliver messages: blue was usually associated with masculinity and spirituality, yellow feminine characteristics, and red associated with anger. The landscape behind them is not particularly accurate as a natural account but the bodies of the horses highlight the features we most associate with these animals--their musculature, their strength, their wildness, and their whipping manes and tales.
