Circles of Time, Sonfist

Alan Sonfist grew up in gang-divided Bronx, New York. Besides the Bronx River was a forest and in there, the violence that ruled the streets did not enter the lush natural habitat. That is where Sonfist would seek sanctuary as a child and that is the place that influenced his love affair with nature and what it's presence can do for humans' existence.

Circles of Time is a three acre big project aimed at mapping out the history of plant life in the area of Tuscany. Each ring represents a different time and thus a different method of planting or type of vegetation.  It tracks the original forest, to the first settlers, to the Greeks and then to the Romans. By employing nature he is both creating art but also a living history of that area.
