Cindy Sherman began taking these photographs, in which she stars as the primary model, at the age of 23. The collection contains over 66 images of different women, taken as though they were a freeze-frame from a movie. Her ability to relay a story, or at least empower her audience to create a story from a glance at her photograph, is pretty incredible. The knowledge that such movies do not exist make it even more intriguing. There are no men in her pictures; she is the sole cast member in these imaginary pieces. The different characters she personifies speak to the role of women and its transformation and the continuing plethora of different roles and lives they lead.
